Gold Manuscripts (5th Century AD)
These gold plates were found from Sri Ksetra, a Pyu Ancient City. The important teachings of the Buddha from Pali Canon are inscribed on them.
The Pyu sites found around Pyay are the earliest urban sites in Southeast Asia. The Pyu Kingdoms flourished for over 1,000 years between 200 BC and AD 900.
The Pyu Ancient Cities marked the emergence of the first historically-documented Buddhist urban civilization in Southeast Asia. The Theravada school prevalent in the Pyu kingdoms was derived from the Andhra region in southeast India.
